I am a hgh school teacher teaching law and I would like to bring my students to the courthouse to see it and perhaps observe a judge and jury. Please tell me what I have to do to make this happen. Thank you. Linda Bey
…Not much really.
Just show up before noon or after the lunch break, usually lasting until 2 p.m.
Check with Duty Counsel in the court room, that is the Government Lawyer appointed to people who have no private lawyer, if the court proceedings you wish to observe have enough gallery seats for your students. They will help accomodate. If Duty Counsel is absent or busy, speak with the Clerk. Each court room has one. Just ask the Court Security officer who best to speak to.
Sometimes, student groups may be split across two or three different courtrooms with different court proceedings, as that’s the only way to accommodate larger numbers of the public.
Prior to entry, ensure your students empty out their pockets at the Metal Detectors. Cell phones with cameras are tolerated, dedicated recording devices like stand-alone cameras are frowned upon as photo taking and voice recordings of court proceedings are forbidden.
As members of the public, you do not need to give any advance notice to attend public hearings.
